Sudbury Christian Messenger for October 2, 2009

The full text of the Sudbury Christian Messenger for October 2, 2009

The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace. ( Psalms 29:11 *NKJV )

"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." ( John 16:33 )

After All; God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. ( 1 Corinthians 14:33 )

Therefore when you find yourself troubled always look to Jesus Christ, For He Himself is our peace, (Ephesians 2:14)

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. ( Galatians 5:22-23 )

The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and mind through Christ Jesus. ( Philippians 4:7 )
now and always!  Amen.

If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.

Praise Report
Sudbury Food Connection Network provided fresh, local food to  Elgin Street Mission

The Sudbury Food Connection Network has a passion to see that everyone has access to healthy food grown in an environmentally responsible manner and at an affordable cost.

Last March, a spaghetti dinner was served to fifty local citizens and the Ste. Anne’s Community Garden became a growing concern.

The garden has produced many pounds of fresh vegetables.   These have been donated to the Elgin Street Mission and other local charities.

This garden, located in the downtown core of Sudbury, is a peaceful sanctuary with wooden garden boxes that are wheelchair accessible.  They offer an opportunity for a little fun, socializing and enjoying God’s creation.             These boxes can be rented for only $20.00 for the growing season.

The Sudbury Food Connection Network has plans to have gardens all over the city.

A big,  heartful thank you to the volunteers and sponsors who are working and donating to give all the citizens of Sudbury access to fresh vegetables.        Sponsors included Home Depot, Rockhaven, Iris Centre, Alice Haasdyk and family, the Foodshed Project and the Canadian Diabetic Association.

I am already looking forward to next year.

Paroisse Ste-Anne-des-Pins,

15.  The Fonz, Henry Winkler, to speak in Sudbury             October 19

Barnard and Winkler focus on

learning disability awareness

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, and this year, a leading Sudbury educator, Sylvia Barnard, and a well-known actor, Henry Winkler, are helping to raise awareness.

Cambrian President Sylvia Barnard – Honourary Chair

Ryan Minor, Chair of the Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury, said that he is very pleased to announce that Cambrian College President Sylvia Barnard is the 2009 Honourary Chair of Learning Disabilities Awareness Month in Sudbury.

“Sylvia Barnard is recognized as an advocate and champion of students with learning disabilities in our community and across Canada,” said Minor. “We are honoured that she has accepted our invitation and is providing some important guidance and support for our activities this year, including our efforts in presenting an Evening with Henry Winkler.”

In keeping with this year’s Learning Disabilities Awareness Month theme, “Celebrating Rising Stars,” the Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury and Cambrian College are bringing Henry Winkler to Sudbury on Monday, October 19, 2009.

Henry Winkler, who is also a director, producer, and best-selling author, will provide an inspirational presentation on the challenges of growing up with a learning disability and the rewards of learning how to triumph over obstacles in his personal and professional life.

Sylvia Barnard said that the common goal during Learning Disabilities Awareness Month must be to raise awareness about learning disabilities and to gain community support for individuals with learning disabilities so that they are able to reach their full potential. “All students with learning disabilities have the ability to succeed in school, to achieve their postsecondary education in colleges or universities, and to find meaningful and exciting careers in the workplace,” stated Barnard. “The potential of these students is limitless, and through the Winkler event and ongoing awareness initiatives, we hope to spread this message far and wide to ensure the success of these individuals in all parts of our community.”

Celebrating Rising Stars – An Evening with Henry Winkler

The event takes place in the Glad Tidings Tabernacle Auditorium on October 19, 2009, beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 (general admission) and are available at the Travelway Inn, 1200 Paris Street; the Greater Sudbury Public Library, Main Branch, 74 Mackenzie Street; and the Greater Sudbury Public Library, New Sudbury Branch, 1346 Lasalle Blvd.

Just an update on what has been happening with Home Word Bound. The City of Sudbury has served me notice that I must cease selling books from my home. That is not to say that I am closing Home Word Bound. No. Not in the least. I am simply diverting services now. I am now presenting and delivering great Christian literature to people where they are! Anyone including individuals, small and large groups, events coordinators....may contact me to consign books, set up a book party or book table or simply to inquire about titles and authors.

Following is a small blog about me again but in the new context...I would like to request it to be forwarded to all churches in the district if possible.

My name is Desiree Walker and I belong to Glad Tidings Tabernacle, one of the largest Pentecostal Assemblies Of Canada in the North. I recently opened a small new and consigned Christian book business presenting and delivering good Christian literature to individuals, small and large groups, events and so on. I carry all types of Christian books including reformed, contemporary, bibles, children’s, women's, men's, prayer, devotional, fiction, mission, non-fiction..... AND *I also carry consigned choir music books and CD's*, making trying out new music - no matter the type

- very affordable for choir groups! I am excited about this part because no other such service is available elsewhere. Many of these musicals have been tried and tested successfully...and may work well for others too!! I may be reached at 705-675-2040 and am located at 206 Boland Ave, Sudbury Ontario. 1.  Action Request re: Bill C-384

Dear Concerned Citizen,

Private Members’ Bill C-384, "An Act to amend the Criminal Code (right to die with dignity)" will soon be debated in the House of Commons this fall.  This is a dangerous Bill that would legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia in Canada.  It would cause the premature deaths of our nation's most vulnerable citizens, notably the sick, the elderly, and those with physical or psychological disabilities.

Now is the time to email Members of Parliament to let them know that you oppose Bill C-384 and that you would like them to vote against it (this will likely be a "free" vote in the House).

You can send an email to all Members of Parliament at once by visiting the following link:

(English)

Thank you for your swift action in this most important matter.  We encourage you to forward this notice to others who share your views.

May God Bless You.

Sincerely,

ContactMPs.com

Editor’s Note: This is a copy of the letter I sent through ContactMPs.com:

Dear (Name of Member of Parliament)

            Dear Members of Parliament,

As a Canadian citizen it is my request that you vote again Bill C-384.

I am concerned that legalizing euthanasia/assisted suicide will open a Pandora’ s Box that ultimately devalues life, as it has in other countries.

Instead, it is vital that our health care system provide needed and appropriate end-of-life services that deal with pain and permit natural death.

Furthermore, it will set up a contradiction for doctors who have sworn to protect life, to, at the same time, be required to end life.

With the abortion legislation in the 1960s, few Canadians foresaw what would happen, that women would use abortion as a form of birth control and that it would be unrestricted.
Similarly, such legislation as Bill C-384, would bring unintended consequences.     Let’ s not go
there.

I hope Canada will remain a country that follows the important Commandment, "Thou shalt not kill."

Thank you for listening.

            Sincerely,

            Diane Ikonen

Editor’s Note:  This is the reply I received from Sudbury MP, Glenn Thibeault

Diane,

Thank you for your email on Bill C-384, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (Right to Die with Dignity). Having spent some time studying the legislation, and after hearing the views of Sudburians, I would like to inform you that it is my intention to vote against the Bill.

I am worried that this Bill does not properly protect Canadians when they are at their most vulnerable. I understand the physical pain and the mental suffering that long term disease causes to individuals and their families. However, I worry that were this legislation to pass, individuals may feel pressured into ending their lives, which concerns me greatly.

I feel that rather than legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide, the best way to help people with terminal or extreme chronic illnesses is to invest is palliative care. The NDP fully endorses the Romanow Report on the future of Medicare, which recommends implementing 'at home' palliative care, and our five step health care plan includes working with the provinces to create long term strategies to manage the treatment of chronic and long-term diseases.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me, and I hope that this clarifies my position.

All the best,

Glenn

2.  Study Shows One Abortion Ups Premature Birth Risk for Women by 36 Percent

by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com Editor
September 16, 2009

Toronto, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- A new study by a Canadian researcher finds that women who have just one abortion increase the risk of having a premature birth in a subsequent pregnancy by 36 percent. The research is the latest in a long string of studies confirming the link between abortion and premature birth.

With premature births leading to an assortment of physical and mental health problems for unborn children, the researcher says women should be told of the risk before having an abortion.

Dr. Prakesh Shah, a professor at the Department of Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto is the main author of the new study, published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

He found that women who have just one abortion in either the first or second trimester of pregnancy, when abortions are most routinely performed, have a 35 percent increased risk of having a low-birth-weight baby in the next pregnancy and a 36 percent increased risk of having a baby born prematurely.

The risk substantially increases for the millions of women who have had more than one abortion and become pregnant.

In those cases, women having multiple abortions have a 93 percent increased risk of subsequently having a premature baby and a 72 percent increased risk of having an underweight baby.

Shah says that the reason for the post-abortion problems in future births is likely because the abortion can cause damage to the woman's cervix.

The Canadian pediatrician and medical professor told the London Daily Mail that women need to be informed about these very real medical risks from abortion.

"When a woman comes for induced termination of pregnancy, she should be counseled about that risk. At least she will be able to make an informed choice," he said.

"I think it should not be used as a way of saying, this is bad and we should not be doing this kind of thing," he added. "There is an association which we should be aware of, and we should let mothers be aware."

The new research is an analysis of 37 studies around the world carried out between 1965 and 2001 to determine whether a previous abortion has any effect on subsequent births.

The new study follows on the heels of European researcher Dr Robbert van Oppenraaij telling colleagues at the annual European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology meeting in Amsterdam that an abortion increases the risk of having a premature birth in a subsequent pregnancy.

He says one induced abortion raises the risk of premature birth in a next pregnancy by 20 percent.

Two or more abortions raises the risk by 90 percent and doubles the risk of a very premature birth, at 34 weeks or less.

"It can be concluded that a history of abortion is associated with an increased risk for premature delivery and very premature delivery," he said.

In February, another study confirmed the link between abortion and subsequent premature births when a woman is pregnant again.

Dr. Manfred Voigt led the study, published in the German medical magazine Z Geburtshilfe Neonatol.

According to the research, women who have one prior abortion boost their risk for a very premature birth in a future pregnancy by 30 percent.

And last month, Roger W. Harms, M.D., a Mayo Clinic obstetrician and medical editor-in-chief, said abortions can cause women problems with subsequent pregnancies.

Harm says there are definitely cases when physicians see "an abortion cause problems in a subsequent pregnancy."

"During a surgical abortion, the fetus is removed from the uterus — often with a vacuum device, a syringe or a spoon-shaped instrument with a sharp edge (curette) — as an outpatient surgical procedure," Harms explains.

In some cases, "a surgical abortion may weaken the cervix or cause scarring on the inside of the uterus."

"If such damage occurs, surgery may be needed to correct the problems before a woman can conceive again or carry a subsequent pregnancy to term," he said.

3.  Yes, animals feel pain, but preborn children feel pain too during lethal abortion procedures

For Immediate Release                                                             September 28, 2009

OTTAWA –  Just prior to MP Maurice Vellacott tabling petitions today, Liberal MP Marlene Jennings tabled a petition calling on the government to adopt effective animal welfare legislation because “It is well known that there is scientific consensus and public acknowledgement that animals feel pain and can experience suffering.”

Vellacott (Conservative – Saskatoon-Wanuskewin) took the opportunity to note that preborn human children also feel pain, pain and suffering that is not recognized in Canadian law which allows for legal abortion through all nine months of a pregnancy.

On the floor of the House of Commons, Vellacott said:

Mr. Speaker, as a follow up to that series of petitions in respect of the pain that animals feel and in view of the fact that babies in the womb for the entire nine months feel some considerable pain caused by the abortion procedures that are used in this country, these petitioners in the country of Canada note that in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms everyone has a right to life, freedom from pain and freedom from the kind of assault fetuses experience in the womb.

It has been 47 years, since May 14, 1969, when Parliament changed the law to permit abortions and since January 28, 1988 Canada has had no law to protect the lives of unborn children. The petitioners are calling on Parliament, as the Supreme Court also urged, to pass legislation for the protection of human life from the time of conception and fertilization until the time of natural death.

4. Canadian Court: "Parents do not have ultimate authority over the moral or religious education of their children":  John Carpay and Karen Selick: On God and government

Posted: September 14, 2009, 10:30 AM by NP Editor
Karen Selick, John Carpay

What could possibly be wrong with children gaining a general knowledge of the world's major religions and the differences among them?

Plenty, if the government requires that children be taught that all religions, and all non-religious moral codes, have equal merit.

In a recent troubling judgment (Lavallee vs. Commission scolaire des Chenes), Quebec's Superior Court ruled that parents do not have ultimate authority over the moral or religious education of their children, and that the state can impose a curriculum that conflicts with the moral codes parents strive to instill. The court rejected a claim brought by parents seeking to exempt their children from the "Ethics and Religious Culture" (ERC) course, which in 2008 became mandatory for all students from Grade 1 to Grade 11, including students in private religious schools.

Some have lauded the court ruling as a rejection of the right to raise children in ignorance. But the parents involved are not against educating their children about other faiths and belief systems. Rather, they wish to do it from their own perspectives.

Parents do not wish to have to instruct their children -- stealthily, at home -- that the moral relativism they are being taught at school is wrong. They do not wish to have to undermine their children's confidence in their schoolteachers. Nor do they wish to become hypocrites, adhering to a particular moral code themselves, but pretending--in order to spare their children the conflict of having to choose between home and school -- that it's okay for their children to accept tenets they consider immoral.

This concern resonates with people of all religions and moral codes. While the parents who brought the court action happen to be Catholic, the secular and humanist Mouvement laique quebecois also opposes the ERC course being mandatory for all children. Agnostic and atheist parents don't want their children forcibly exposed to religion at a young age.

If Quebec's goal were merely to save children from religious and cultural ignorance, it would tolerate a diversity of methods for achieving that goal. But no such tolerance has been extended to Loyola High School, a private Catholic school in Montreal. Its curriculum already included information about the world's other major religions, but in keeping with its mission and values, Loyola teaches its students that Roman Catholicism is actually true and ought to be adhered to. Quebec says such instruction is unacceptable because it is not "even-handed."

Since virtually every religion and moral code includes as one of its tenets a belief in its superiority over rival systems (or else why adhere to it?), Quebec's insistence on even-handedness is tantamount to compelling every teacher of religion or morality to deny or contradict some part of his creed. Why should teachers be forced into such hypocrisy in a country whose constitution -- in Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms -- guarantees freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief, opinion and expression?

The province maintains, and the court accepted, that parents' constitutional freedoms remain intact since they are still free to instruct their children in their own moral codes in the privacy of home. But even homeschoolers, who frequently opt out of government schooling precisely because they prefer to instruct their children in their own belief systems, will be required to teach the "even-handed" ERC course or an equivalent course. Imagine parents instructing their children about the importance of adhering to their own religious beliefs in the morning, then telling them that there are a dozen other religions to choose from, all equally valid, in the afternoon. It's ludicrous for the province to argue that such a process respects freedom of belief.

The "government-knows-best" attitude that Quebec is displaying has been in existence as long as compulsory public education itself. Nineteenth century Prussia was the first to impose a mandatory curriculum to teach all children from ages five to 13 discipline, respect for authority and the ability to follow orders. Prussia sought to produce obedient citizens who would understand that the King is always just, and his decisions are always right. As the German philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte explained: "The schools must fashion the person, and fashion him in such a way that he simply cannot will otherwise than what you wish him to will."

Freedom of religion and conscience, parental authority, and family autonomy are bulwarks which protect all citizens from government coercion and intrusion. We dismantle these bulwarks at our peril.

5.  Child Safe Canada - A new campaign from CFAC

Canada Family Action Coalition has launched a campaign against what is commonly referred to as “child pornography” but what really should be called child sex abuse images. Go to www.childsafenation.ca <</span>http://www.childsafenation.ca> to read about the need for changes to our Criminal Code with the goal of deterring criminals and protecting children. For those who aren’t convinced that this is an important issue, consider these statistics, provided by CFAC:

•           Tens of thousands of new images or videos are put on the Internet every week and hundreds of thousands of searches for child sexual abuse images are performed daily.
•           The children in the images are getting younger:
o          83 percent of children are 12 years old or younger.
o          39 percent had images of children between the ages of 3 and 5.
o          19 percent had images of infants under 3 years old.
•           The content of the images and videos is becoming increasingly violent.

CFAC’s effort includes a campaign called "Coins that Make Change" though which small businesses can collect change which can then be used to help fund this effort to stop the abuse of children. Go to www.childsafenation.ca <</span>http://www.childsafenation.ca> to sign your business up or find more suggestions for how you can help.

We are so thankful to God for this bill and for the many young ones that will be protected from the horrors of human trafficking once it passes through the Senate as well!
.
We want to be one of the first to say a big CONGRATULATIONS to Joy Smith (MP) who tabled this bill and saw it through the house. Editor’s Note:  Thank you to a Sudbury Christian Messenger reader who shared with us the letter she wrote to Senator Marie Claire Poulin

Dear Ms Poulin,

I am writing regarding Bill C-268 (human trafficking). This bill has just been passed in the House and is now going to Senate. It deals with increasing the punishments against people who traffic children, imposing mandatory minimum sentences. This legislation sends an important message to those who seek to prey on the innocent.
Will you vote to pass it?

Sincerely,

Jane.

After two lesbian women wed in Toronto, Canada in 2005 the homosexual couple cannot find a way out of the marriage.  The Indiana women were denied a divorce from the state as it does not recognize same-sex marriages.  Neither can the women gain a divorce back in Canada as the country requires at least one of the women to be a citizen for at least one year.

1.  Florida school officials put on trial for praying at school event

_ www.catholicnewsagency.com <</span>http://www.catholicnewsagency.com>    web

Pensacola, Fla., Sep 16, 2009 / 03:43 pm (CNA).- In what critics are characterizing as the “criminalization of prayer,” a principal and an athletic director at a Florida high school are facing criminal contempt charges for violating a federal order prohibiting prayer at school events.

Principal Frank Lay and Athletic Director Robert Freeman at Pace High School in the Florida panhandle county of Santa Rosa could face fines, jail time and loss of their retirement benefits.

During a luncheon to honor those who contributed toward the public school's athletic Field House, Principal Lay reportedly asked Freeman to offer a blessing for the meal. Students were not present at the time of the blessing.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) charged that the action constituted a violation of a previous court order and accused Lay and Freeman of contempt of court.

Last year the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the Santa Rosa County School District, charging that some of the teachers and administration endorsed religion. The school district did not fight the suit but consented to an order fashioned by the ACLU.

“School officials shall neither offer nor participate in a prayer during or in conjunction with a school event,” part of the order read.
“School officials shall not authorize students, student groups, a student body… or third parties to include prayer, whether or not it is noted in a printed program, during or in conjunction with a school event,” the order continued. It barred “non-student third-parties” from offering a prayer, invocation, benediction or other religious remarks during or in conjunction with a school event.

U.S. Rep. J. Randy Forbes (R-V), a co-chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, criticized the trial of the two school officials in a Wednesday speech on the House floor.

“Under the order issued by this judge in this court,” he claimed, “this principal would not have been able to ask the president of the United States to speak at the school if the president concluded his speech, as he often does, with the phrase ‘God bless America.’”

He charged that the precedent set by this case would eventually result in the Speaker of the House and the House chaplain being threatened with jail for asking for and delivering a prayer, respectively.

Rep. Forbes invoked the Founding Fathers who were dedicated to a set of rights “given to us by the very Creator, the mention of whom by this principal or this athletic director could now lead them to a jail term.”
“It’s time for Americans to simply say ‘enough is enough,'” Forbes stated.
Rep. Forbes and a bipartisan group of 60 Members of Congress have signed a letter of support to Lay and Freeman.

“The tradition of offering prayer in America has become so interwoven into our nation’s spiritual heritage that to charge someone criminally for engaging in such an innocent practice would astonish the men who founded this country on religious liberty,” their letter said.

The letter noted that Rev. William Linn, the Chaplain of the House in the first session of Congress, began the tradition of beginning each legislative day with prayer.

Lay and Freeman will be put on trial on Thursday, September 17, 2009

2.  Some 750,000 pedophiles prowling Internet: UN

GENEVA — Some 750,000 sexual predators are constantly prowling the Internet in a bid to gain contact with children, a United Nations report warned on Wednesday.

"The number of sites devoted to child pornography worldwide is growing. The number of predators connected to the Internet at any one time is estimated to be 750,000," said Najat Maala, Special Rapporteur on the child prostitution and child pornography issue.

Unicef also estimates there are more than four million websites featuring minors, including those of children aged under two years.

More than 200 new images are also circulated daily, according to Maala, who pointed out the production and distribution of child pornographic images rakes in between 3 and 20 billion dollars (2.04 and 13.62 billion euros) a year.

"Images of sexually exploited children are not only growing in number but are also increasingly shocking," added Maala, who estimates that between 10,000 and 100,000 minors are victims of the child pornography network.

She noted that the age of sexual consent should not be used as an excuse for child pornographic peddlers -- as it is used in places where this age limit is lower than the definition of who constitutes a minor.

This is because a "child under 18 cannot be considered to be able to consent to sexual exploitation, including child pornography," she added.

3.  Obama Admits Rep. Wilson Was Right

Date:  9/14/2009 8:49:47 AM

by Bryan Fischer, AFA Director of Issue Analysis

The White House has now conceded that Rep. Joe Wilson was exactly right when he accused President Obama of lying when Mr. Obama denied that illegal aliens would be covered under the government takeover of health care.

Wilson knew that every attempt to deny coverage to “undocumented immigrants” had been voted down by Democrats, and that there was no verification method or enforcement mechanism in place to keep them from getting taxpayer-subsidized health insurance.

Last night, the White House caved, releasing a statement saying that the administration is now backing a proposal that says, “Verification will be required when purchasing health insurance on the exchange,” and specifically mentions the SAVE program (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) that states currently use to make sure illegals don’t consume taxpayer-funded benefits that are reserved for legal residents.

The bottom line here is that if Rep. Wilson hadn’t “called out” the president, this concession never would have occurred. It turns out that everybody who supports sound immigration policy but who condemned the Congressman – including House Republicans that forced Wilson to apologize publicly - now owes him an apology. Don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

4.  Notre Dame president to join anti-abortion march

9:33 a.m. CDT, September 17, 2009

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame president criticized for inviting President Barack Obama to campus plans to take part in an anti-abortion march in Washington.

The Rev. John Jenkins says in an e-mail to students and others that he will go to the annual March for Life "to witness to the sanctity of life." He invited others from Notre Dame to attend the Jan. 22 protest on the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision establishing a nationwide right to abortion.

Jenkins faced widespread criticism last spring from Catholic bishops and anti-abortion activists after inviting Obama to deliver Notre Dame's commencement address and receive an honorary degree.

Opponents objected to Obama's support for abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research, positions that contradict church teachings.

5.  Controversy surrounds Boston College professor's defense of marriage

After Boston College Law School Professor Scott T. Fitzgibbon appeared in an advertisement in Maine speaking against the legalization of same-sex marriage, the Law School Dean was contacted by many who felt it was inappropriate for the professor to appear in the ad.  In a statement released by Dean John Garvey, Professor Fitzgibbon's right to express his views was defended.  Read the memorandum by visiting http://bit.ly/gpzhw or view the commercial at http://bit.ly/3a2YDU.

6.  Second schoolboy, nine, arrives at school as girl

Tuesday, 22 September 2009  Another schoolboy has been introduced to his classmates as a girl, and this time he is aged nine.

It follows last week’s news of a twelve-year-old boy who had arrived at his new secondary school dressed as a girl and using a new name.

In this latest case pupils at the nine-year-old’s primary school were apparently told that he had left, but that a new girl was taking his place.

One parent at the school told The Sun newspaper: “My son came home from school and asked why one of his friends had become a girl.

“I thought he was joking, but he kept asking – that’s when alarm bells began ringing.”

She added: “My son is too young to really understand the significance of what’s happening. It’s hard to explain to him.

“He doesn’t understand the differences between girls’ and boys’ bodies yet. I’m terrified he’ll ask me if he can become a girl as well.”

Another parent said: “This is distressing for both parents and kids.

“This is the talk of the playground. The kids have been told to treat this new girl as they would any other pupil, but how can they? They’re confused.”

Just last week it was reported that a twelve-year-old boy had begun secondary school dressed as a girl.

It has also emerged that the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, which regulates the use of sex change hormones in children, is reviewing its guidelines.

Currently, hormone treatment is normally only allowed for over-16s.

Around 60 children a year in Britain are identified as wanting to change sex, although only around 20 per cent of them eventually decide to go on to become transsexual adults, officials told The Daily Telegraph.

There are fears that transsexuals are being offered physical surgery to deal with a psychological condition.

Critics point to evidence of transsexuals who later change their minds.

According to a Home Office report on transsexualism: “Many people revert to their biological sex after living for some time in the opposite sex”.

Doctors from the NHS Portman Clinic – an internationally acclaimed centre – have stated, “what many patients find is that they are left with a mutilated body, but the internal conflicts remain”.

 7.  Homosexual-rights advocates say sex on public property is a civil right Reaction mixed to police focus on Fens; Some feel it puts civil rights at risk

By Maria Cramer

Globe Staff / September 21, 2009

A few weeks ago, the strollers, gardeners, and joggers who use the Back Bay Fens began noticing something different. Parked right in front of the tall, wild reeds that line the Muddy River was an idling police cruiser.

A few days later, an unmarked cruiser slowly rolled down the grassy patch that separates the thicket of reeds and the park’s famed Victory Gardens. Another time, it was a large blue and white prisoner transport truck.

For the last few weeks, police in cars and motorcycles have patrolled the Fens off Boylston Street for about 16 hours a day, a move that has thrilled many of the gardeners, who want to tend their radishes, tomatoes, and dahlias without encountering debris from some of the more unsavory uses of the park. But one person’s vision of a cleaner, safer park is another person’s possible civil rights violation. Some are concerned that the patrols may be targeting gay men, who often use the reeds as cover for their trysts.

8.Dominican Republic Passes Complete Abortion Ban

By Samantha Singson

(NEW YORK – C-FAM)  Last week, lawmakers in the Dominican Republic gave their final approval to a pro-life constitutional change despite fierce criticism and pressure from UN agencies and abortion advocates to defeat the measure.  The Dominican Republic’s National Assembly easily ratified a revision of Article 30 in a vote of 128 in favor with 32 opposed. The article now states that "the right to life is inviolable from conception until death."

9.  UN Official Oversteps Mandate to Back “Gay Pride” Event in Serbia

By Susan Yoshihara, Ph.D.

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) The head of the United Nations (UN) mission in Serbia recently promoted a highly controversial homosexual rights demonstration in Belgrade against public opposition and beyond his mandate to work “closely with national governments” to “advocate the interests and mandates of the UN.” UN Resident Coordinator William Infante backed a “gay pride” parade scheduled for September 20th, an event that Serbs have rejected since the last time it was orchestrated in 2001. According to the Associated Press (AP), the organizers canceled the march rather than accept the government’s offer of an alternative route, which was a response to concerns about its ability to provide adequate security due to rising public opposition to the event.

10.  Uruguayan Legislators Approve Gender Change as a "Right"

Latest anti-family legislation to pass to Senate for approval

Wednesday September 23, 2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman, Latin America Correspondent

MONTEVIDEO, September 22, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Days after the Uruguayan Senate approved a bill that analysts say will legalize adoption by homosexual couples, the nation's Chamber of Deputies (its lower legislative house) has passed a measure to allow people to decide what their gender will be -- regardless of their actual sex.

The bill states that "everyone has the right to the free development of his personality regarding his own gender identity, independently of his biological, genetic, anatomic, morphologic, hormonal, assigned, or other sex."

After two years of identifying one's self as belonging to the opposite sex, and with the approval of an "interdisciplinary" committee of specialists, one will have the right to change one's sex legally.  In the case of "sex change" operations, in which the patient is mutilated to resemble the opposite sex, the two year waiting period will not be required.

However, the bill prohibits people who have changed their "gender identity" from marrying a person of the same biological sex, according to a provision that has been added to the legislation.  Although homosexuals can enter into "civil unions" according to Uruguayan law, they cannot "marry" -- a distinction that is largely a matter of terminology.

The Chamber of Deputies also added a provision requiring an individual to be at least 18 years old before changing his sex legally. Those who wish to switch back must wait five years.

The legislation, which was approved on September 15, will now return to the Senate where it is expected to be approved.  It is supported by the socialist Broad Front coalition as well as other parties.

Uruguay has been in the vanguard of anti-family legislation in Latin America.  It has legalized homosexual adoption and homosexual civil unions, and is on the verge of legalizing adoption by homosexual couples as well as unmarried heterosexual couples.  It also recently announced that gays would be permitted to enter the armed forces.

11.  Teacher sues LA school dist. over gay agenda

September 23, 9:50 AMEvangelical ExaminerJake Jones

California is one state that seems to be pushing the homosexual agenda more than any other.  With the cooperation of the National Education Association, a teachers union, the state of California seems to take pride in promoting abnormal (not alternative) lifestyles.  And now, we see what can happen to a teacher who holds fast to moral values.

Manuel Fernandez, a special education teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District has filed a discrimination suit against LAUSD, saying he was forced to quit for not showing enough support for the pro-homosexual emphasis at his school.

Problems began for Fernandez in the spring of 2007, when he was chastised for not buying and wearing a red “Day of Silence” t-shirt.  Administrators at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, where Fernandez taught in the Social Justice learning community, strongly encouraged teachers to participate in the pro-homosexual Day of Silence, even though the event bills itself as a student-led protest. Shortly after Fernandez declined to buy and wear the shirt, he received a written review that rebuked him, stating that he “sometimes had difficulty understanding his colleagues’ attempts at incorporating issues of social justice into the curriculum and, at times, he has not been supportive of those issues, such as LGBTQ rights.” LGBTQ is an acronym increasingly used to mean Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning.

Fernandez also drew fire for voicing the requests of his predominantly Hispanic Catholic students that a pro-gay poster be moved inside to a classroom bulletin board so they would not have to walk under it several times a day. Fernandez was then shunned by fellow teachers and administrators, given larger, more unruly classes, moved to a less desirable location, and ordered not to send any problem students to the principal’s office. Fernandez eventually sought medical treatment for stress and related medical problems and finally placed on medical leave by his physician after more than a year of harassment. Fernandez’ lawsuit, filed in state court and removed by LAUSD to federal court, alleges First Amendment violations and discrimination, harassment and retaliation under state employment laws.

Fernandez is being represented by the Pacific Justice Institute

12.  Kennedy's Senate seat goes to a Catholic who's favored abortion rights

Paul Kirk, Jr., chairman of the John Kennedy Library Foundation Board of Directors, has been named to a five-month term to fill Kennedy's senate seat.

By Lisa Poole, AP

Paul Kirk has never held elective office before and, in five months, the man named Thursday to stand in for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy will be replaced by the winner of a special election.

So why might anti-abortion rights group be displeased with his appointment?

13.  First-Ever Polls Comparing Conservative and Progressive Religious Activists

Show Divergent Identities and Strategies, Common Commitment to Political
Involvement

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- New surveys conducted by leading
researchers on religion and politics in America show the divergent ways
conservative and progressive religious activists understand their religious
identity, engage in politics, and prioritize issues. The 2009 Religious
Activist Surveys were conducted by the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at
the University of Akron in partnership with Public Religion Research.

"Both conservative and progressive religious activists are committed to being
visible and active in the political process," said Dr. John C. Green, Director
of the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron.  "This
fact suggests that the prominent role that religion played in the 2008
election is likely to continue in the future."

"If anyone still believed that committed religious activists come down on only
one side of any major policy issue, these surveys should finally put that idea
to rest," said Dr. Robert P. Jones, president of Public Religion Research.
"These activists are faithful, engaged, and have widely divergent views about
both the place of religion in public life and the political implications of
their faith."

Both groups of activists are more likely than members of the general public to
report that religion is important in their lives, and they're more likely to
be frequent worshippers.  But they approach their faith in strikingly
different ways.  For example, nearly half of conservative activists (48%) view
scripture as the literal word of God, a view held by only 3% of progressives.

Conservative and progressive activists have markedly different political
priorities. Conservative activists overwhelmingly identify abortion and
same-sex marriage as most important issues.  Fewer than 10% of progressive
religious activists call those "most important" issues.  Highest priorities
for progressive activists are poverty (74%), health care (67%), environment
(56%), jobs/economy (48%), and the Iraq war (45%).

Progressive religious activists perceived themselves as having significant
influence on the 2008 election compared to other groups, while conservative
religious activists perceived themselves as having relatively little
influence. More than 4-in-10 (43%) progressive activists say that progressive
religious groups had a great amount of influence, roughly as influential as
labor unions (44%) and business groups (41%). By a nearly 2-to-1 margin,
conservative religious activists also thought "religious progressive groups"
had a greater influence than "religious conservative groups" (25% vs. 13%).

Conservative and progressive religious activists have sharply different views
on cultural, economic, and foreign policy issues, including abortion, gay and
lesbian rights, health care, the environment, torture, and the role of
government.   See the full report for data on those issues as well as activist
and voting behavior in the 2008 elections and views on the role of religion in
public life.  The full report, including a description of survey methodology,
and the survey top lines are available at

1.  RETARDED GRANDPARENTS

(Actual report from a young student)
After Christmas, a teacher asked her young pupils how they
spent their holiday away from school.  One child wrote the following:

We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa.

They used to live in a big brick house but Grandpa got retarded and they moved to Arizona . Now they live in a tin box and have rocks painted green to look like grass. They ride around on their bicycles and wear name tags because they don't know who they are anymore.

They go to a building called a wreck center, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay now, they do exercises there, but they don't do them very well.

There is a swimming pool too, but they all jump up and down in it with hats on.  At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape.
Sometimes they sneak out, and go cruising in their golfcarts.
Nobody there cooks, they just eat out.
And, they eat the same thing every night --- early birds.
Some of the people can't get out past the man in the doll house.
The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center for pot luck.

My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too..

When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll house.
Then I will let people out, so they can visit their grandchildren.

2.  FARM KID in Marines

(Now at San Diego MARINE CORPS RECRUIT TRAINING)

Dear Ma and Pa,
I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled.
I was restless at first because you get to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. But I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing.
Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food, plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much.
We go on 'route marches,' which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A 'route march' is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.
The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.
This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.
Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake .. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6' and 130 pounds and he's 6'8' and near 300 pounds dry.
Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.

Your loving daughter,
Alice

3.  Church

One Sunday morning, a mother went in to wake her son and tell him it was time to get ready for church, to which he replied, "I'm not going."
"Why not?" she asked.
I'll give you two good reasons," he said. "(1), they don't like me, and (2), I don't like them."
His mother replied, "I'll give YOU two good reasons why YOU SHOULD go to church.
(1) You're 59 years old, and (2) you're the pastor!"

Words of Wisdom
1.  One bulb at a time

A physics teacher in high school, once told the students that while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn't slow a train very much, a billion of them would . With that thought in mind, read the following, obviously written by a good Canadian.
Good idea . . . one light bulb at a time . . . .

Check this out . I can verify this because I was in Lowe's the other day for some reason and just for the heck of it I was looking at the hose attachments . They were all made in China . The next day I was in Home Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose attachments there. They were made in Canada. Start looking.

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job. So, after reading this email, I think this lady is on the right track . Let's get behind her!

My grandson likes Hershey's candy . I noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more . My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest .. You have to read the labels on everything .

This past weekend I was at Wal-mart . I needed 60W light bulbs . I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled, "Everyday Value. " I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this -in Canada in a company in Ontario.

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here .

My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in Canada - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying Canadian, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from overseas companies!

(We should have awakened a decade ago . . . . . . )

Let's get with the program . . . . help our fellow Canadians keep their jobs and create more jobs here in Canada. One bulb at a time

Prayer Request

1.  Pray about donating to LifeSiteNews to support and encourage them

Hi , I wanted to encourage you to pray about donating to this organization.  As you know, they strive to promote life and family, the cornerstone values that we share and the you try to promote through your organizations.  Please do pray about giving, even personally, as this is such a unique and God-honouring service, I am not surprised it has been facing attack recently.  Even $50 or $100 will mean a lot. See the letter below to gain a better appreciation about what they do to get the news and action items to our plate!

Sincerely,

jane.

Dear Readers,
Whether you read our reports through our website or are a subscriber to our daily e-mails, have you ever wondered what actually goes into producing 10 to 20 original news stories every single weekday?
Let me tell you.
Years ago our founders, Steve Jalsevac and John-Henry Westen, acquired a rare “story gnome,” who now sits in our office, eats paper and magically produces dozens of cutting edge, truthful reports with a flip of his wrists, while we kick back and sip on martinis...
Ok, so that might not be true. Such are the daydreams of news editors!
In reality, our mission requires a significant-sized, highly-trained and experienced paid staff, not to mention first-rate technology.
And unlike the gnome, we don’t magically create the news in the blink of an eye.  Here is what really happens each day:
Late at night and early the next morning, Editor-in-chief John-Henry Westen begins scouring his hundreds of emails and the Internet for news tips or breaking stories. Throughout the day he also receives numerous telephone calls and stays in constant communication with our Managing Director, Steve Jalsevac, and LSN’s extensive network of contacts around the globe.
John-Henry then assigns the day’s stories to LSN’s writers located on three different continents.  US stories usually go to either Kathleen Gilbert or Peter Smith, both graduates of Christendom College, and both reporting out of Virginia.
Kathleen was the salutatorian of her graduating class, and is now pursuing her masters in systematic theology part time. Peter Smith, on the other hand, was the editor-in-chief of Christendom’s student journal, a founder of the college’s debate society, is an accomplished actor, and has several years’ experience writing for LSN.
Canadian stories go to long time writer Thaddeus Baklinski, a father of 14 children, or Patrick Craine, a philosophy graduate of Redeemer College (with distinctions) and theology graduate of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy (summa cum laude), who report out of Ontario and Nova Scotia respectively.
South American news is covered by our Latin-American correspondent Matthew Hoffman, who has years of experience working and writing for conservative causes, having been published in numerous publications including The Wall Street Journal.
European stories go to LSN veteran Hilary White, who in previous years lived and worked out of the UK, but now works out of her office in Rome.  Hilary was close to the late John Muggeridge and has many similar other notable connections. Her location and her European connections allow her to gain the inside scoop on all things Europe and Vatican-related before almost anyone else.
In case you’re not counting, that’s already 8 employees, and we’re just getting started!
Often crucial news items crop up that require more attention and thought than others.  When this happens, John-Henry contacts Steve, who has been involved in the pro-life cause for 30 years.  The pair then begins discussions with pro-life, pro-family and religious leaders, medical and scientific specialists and other advisers and groups from whatever country/continent the issue pertains to, and set to work on the stories.
Series of conference calls involving three or more participants are a part of everyday life for the co-founders. As well, they communicate frequently with each other throughout each day and with myself, the assistant editor (John Jalsevac), and the staff writers about story developments and concerns.
After meticulously accounting for all the facts, and determining how to craft the story in the most accurate, charitable and effective manner possible, Steve and John-Henry then start working on writing these more sensitive reports, outlining the truth behind the issues in the way determined by the day’s (sometimes week’s) discussions.
Finally, as stories are completed, the writers send them to me. I carefully edit each of the reports for content, grammar, spelling, style, factual accuracy and overall effect. Then I format and publish the stories on the website, at which point the news usually goes through one final edit by Steve. When everything is ready (sometimes quite late in the evening), Steve sends that day’s news to our thousands of email subscribers.
But that’s not all. Take a deep breath, because we’ve still got a ways to go!
There’s still the technical side of things, like the whole complex infrastructure of the website, the email server, the design, and all the ins and outs of day-to-day technical support.  These are made possible only by our web designer Rob Houston, our webmaster, Harvey Armoogan, and our web developer Joe Baird - all who work under Steve and are very capable men who share the passion for the LifeSiteNews mission.
And lucky for Tim Waggoner, our development officer who tackles the fundraising duties at LSN, the “story gnome” is a work of fiction, or else he probably wouldn’t have a job right now.  But, at the same time, the scope of LSN’s operations, and the constant challenges and uncertainties of keeping a growing pro-life non-profit funded puts a lot of pressure on Tim.
Tim works closely under Steve, coordinating new developments with the technical team and strategizing ways to cover LSN’s current and expanding budget. And it is always expanding. If it weren’t, we could never achieve our goal of reporting on the culture wars and effectively counter-balancing the bias of the MSM.
On that note, I would like to mention the recent hiring of Matthew Anderson, yet another top-of-the-class summa cum laude philosophy and theology graduate of Christendom College.  Matt is our new US coordinator, working out of our humble new, one-room office in Front Royal, Virginia. (Note: the Pittsburgh address will no longer be used by LSN, but mail sent there will be forwarded to the new address.) Matt also occasionally writes for LSN when time permits and the need arises.
Matt is being greatly assisted by now former US coordinator Meg Jalsevac, who is expecting her third child and therefore could not continue with the coordinator tasks. However, Meg is still involved from her home in Pittsburgh as the Secretary/Treasurer of LifeSiteNews.com US. She also occasionaly writes LSN stories and provides invaluable input into the operation.
And that is a brief overview of the LSN team (only some of which are shown in the above picture) and a day in the life of LifeSiteNews.com. There are, of course far more details that have been left out of this short sketch. Give me a few days and I will tell you all about it. But by now the point should be clear - producing our reliable, first-rate reporting every single weekday takes the coordinated efforts of an exceptional, highly dedicated staff.
But, that’s still not the end of the story. Because there is still one HUGE group of people that I’ve left out. This is the group that ensures that LSN is able to exist at all. It is, in fact, only because of this group that, despite all the odds, we have been able to provide our exceptional news reporting to countless millions of readers for over a decade.
That other group is YOU.
You, our readers, are our financial backers and our prayer warriors. Your donations pay for the modest salaries (too modest actually) paid to our staff, which in turn help them to support their families while they engage in this culture-saving and, yes, life-saving work. By the way, all but Matt Anderson work from their homes. You also pay for the technical equipment and numerous other expenses involved in operating LSN every day.
And, of course, your prayers protect and strengthen us to truly be beacons of truth for a world that is more confused, lost, and desperate than perhaps ever before in history.
So the next time you read a LifeSiteNews story, think about the efforts of the thousands of people (staff and dedicated supporters) that have gone into creating and publishing it.  And remember that it is only you, the readers, who can ensure that LSN continues to do (and continually does better) what it has been doing - for years to come.
Now, more than ever before, in these difficult cultural and financial times, we need your generosity and prayers behind us, keeping us going.
Before I close I also want to issue a sincere thank you to those who have already helped us raise $26,000 so far during this campaign - you are still receiving these emails in order to keep you updated on this goal that you have given us a hope of achieving.
We ask those who have not yet donated, to please do so generously today. If your prefer to donate by mail or telephone, Click Here (US, International) or Here (Canada)

Readers’ Comments
1.  Adrien, a reader of Sudbury Christian Messenger, sent in the following question, which is reprinted with his permission:

Q:  Does God want me to spread information like this?

Editor Diane’s A:  That’s between you and God.         When God’s Holy Spirit stirred in me to get me involved in the culture war, it was the farthest thing from my mind, and the last thing on earth that I wanted to do for God; however, He had a different plan from mine.

One thing I know for sure …………to do anything that is not prompted by the Holy Spirit is to be on one’s own steam power, and that’s not a position that can be sustained indefinitely.

Noam Chomsky says that 10% of the people are thinking ………..the rest are anesthetized by tv, addictions etc.     The 10% are dangerous.           God has called me to be one of the 10%.        It’s not the role I would have liked …….I often feel like Jonah being called to Nineveh and not wanting to go.    But, God …………           His Holy Spirit enables and empowers me to do what I cannot or would not.

Q:  Is it OK for me to name drop or drop the name of a political affiliation, in a way that points a finger?

Editor Diane’s A.:  Adrien, I think you’ve put your finger on a quintessential Canadian dilemma here ……..we are so loving and tolerant as Canadians……….we don’t want to hurt anyone.

I try to do what Jesus commanded, to speak the truth, in love.         Canadians often just want the love part ……..they don’t want to hear the truth ……….because the truth is not inclusive of all points of view.

I was at the Luncheon of Hope on Friday at which Wendy Mesley from CBC’s Marketplace program spoke ……….she started off by saying that we don’t know what the truth is.             That’s a very Canadian statement …………but it’s not a Christian statement.

Adrien’s  Response:  Hi Diane ,
Your reply helped me to temporarily step out of my own default mindset and see your perspective.  I appreciate your reply.

You are welcome to publish my questions and use my name.

Request for Donations

1.  Request from Institute of Marriage and Family Canada to match a $40 000 donor

Many of us are concerned about the erosion of the family in Canada today.

Like you, I want to live in a country where marriage and family are valued and supported. I want to see my children surrounded by communities founded on thriving families. I want to help my nation’s leaders make decisions that will affirm the family, not weaken it.

For this reason, Focus on the Family Canada launched the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada/Institut du Mariage et de la Famille Canada (IMFC) in our nation’s capital. Our aim is to conduct and compile research related to marriage and family and make it available to Canada’s decision makers.

Children have the best outcomes when they grow up with a mom and dad who are in a healthy marriage relationship. Likewise, societies thrive when families stay together.

And the more we research the effects of family breakdown, the more we prove that God’s design for marriage and family is the best for parents, children and society at large. While our Christian worldview tells us this, research and scientific evidence is the language most often heard in our secular system of government.
The IMFC is privileged to be the only group of its kind in Canada focusing on this vital research. But we continue to need your help.

That’s why I am excited to write to you today. One of our faithful supporters has offered to match the first $40,000 we receive in donations from now until October 31.

This means that any contribution you make to the IMFC today will be doubled. And as a result, our research, writing, briefings and conferences will keep evidence supporting the value of family at the forefront of the minds of Canadian decision makers.

The IMFC has had many opportunities to share its findings in the most significant arenas. We recently published groundbreaking research showing that family breakdown is not only emotionally damaging to
children, but costly to taxpayers as well. In fact, our research shows that the cost of family breakdown is more than $7 billion a year on government programs alone!

And at a time of economic downturn, mainstream media and Canada’s decision makers are beginning to realize they can no longer afford to ignore the issues threatening families. From capturing headlines in newspapers such as the National Post to being referenced in letters to the editor, TV interviews and blog sites, our findings are actively being sought out.

In March, we hosted a conference with more than 100 in attendance including members of Parliament, key government representatives and community leaders. This gathering gave us an opportunity to present the importance of fostering healthy families as the cornerstone of public policy. Our keynote speaker, the Right Honourable Iain Duncan Smith, the former leader of Britain’s Conservative Party, even had the opportunity to share these insights in a private one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Our endeavours at the IMFC are bearing fruit: decision makers are listening to the truth; mainstream media are pursuing our findings; and government officials are turning to us for up-to-date research on marriage and family. Your faithful support has made all of this possible.

As I think about the future of the family in Canada, I am filled with optimism and hope. Through the IMFC’s research, God’s Truth is increasingly being represented in the national discussion about marriage and family.
Will you continue to be part of the tremendous work God is doing in Ottawa by renewing your support for the IMFC? Together we can impact Canada for the better.

Yours truly,

Dave Quist
Executive Director
Institute of Marriage and Family Canada

P.S. Your donation will be matched – dollar for dollar – but only if we receive your gift by October 31, 2009. Thank you for partnering with us and helping to stand for God’s truth in Canada.
