4)  New Direction Ministries:  Sexual Identity in the Local Church       Feb. 6 & 7
David Hawkins writes:
Hello Friends, I am forwarding the enclosed letter, at the request of my friend John Howard, in which he outlines a workshop that he and others will be presenting in Sudbury, on Friday February 6, 2009 and Saturday Feb. 7, 2009. This seminar will be under the auspices of New Direction Ministries of Canada, entitled "Sexual Identity in the Local Church".  This event is being co-sponsored by Grace Community Church and Glad Tidings Tabernacle. I am a friend of John's and I am familiar with the work that he does through New Direction Ministries, reaching out to those within our Christian communities (and beyond) who struggle with issues of same gender attraction. In my view, John's life experience, educational training, experience as a front-line church pastor, and currently as a Christian counselor, eminently qualify  him to speak in an informed and redemptive way into  this subject. I am sending this to friends, who serve our community in capacities such as pastor, counselor, educator, health professional, addiction worker, self help group facilitators, lay church leaders and  social  workers who I believe may have a professional interest in attending this program and/or have clients/patients/parishioners/students who may find this model of Christian ministry to same gender-attracted individuals to be helpful.
You will note within John's letter, there are references to The New  Direction Ministries' website, as well as contact numbers, should   you have any questions. Details will be found therein as to the   registration proceedures.
I hope you find this helpful.  Yours very truly,  Dave Hawkins  (705)  522-2630

From: John Howard [mailto:john@newdirection.ca] Sent: Friday, January 02, 2009 5:22 PM To: Dave Hawkins Subject: New Direction Ministries - SILC Seminar in Sudbury
Dear Pastor, Church or Ministry Leader, Counselor or human services personnel,
My name is John Howard.  You may have met me on some occasion when Ive been in Sudbury during the last couple of years.  I live in Barrie, but after telling my story at Celebrate Recovery at Glad Tidings a couple of years ago, I was invited to come to Sudbury to be available to people who were specifically looking for a male, Christian counselor with my background and expertise.  Since that time I have been coming to Sudbury on a fairly regular bi-weekly or monthly basis.
Part of my story is that as a teenager and young man, even though Id come to Christ through a dramatic conversion experience and would become a pastor, I struggled with homosexuality and sexual addiction.  Full of shame and afraid of exposure, my turmoil worsened until I was in my mid-30s when two ladies in my church, in caring although untrained ministry, offered to help me.  That was the beginning of my recovery.  Today I praise God that I am secure in my identity as a man, in my sexual identity, in recovery from sexual addiction, and in healthy relationship with my wonderful wife.  (We recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary.)
In addition to being a counselor in private practice, I serve as regional coordinator and staff counselor of New Direction Ministries.  New Direction is a national ministry that partners with churches to equip and resource Christ-followers for relational, respectful, relevant and redemptive engagement with those questioning, or struggling with their sexual identity. In the past, the church has not done a good job of helping people who find themselves same-gender-attracted.
Our Mission is:  Creating a safe place for same-gender attracted people to journey towards wholeness in Christ.
Our Vision is: To see every gay and lesbian person in Canada encounter Christ through friendship with a Christ-follower; and for every Christian struggling with same-gender attraction to access redemptive ministry in their own region.
One of the primary resources we offer is a seminar entitled, Sexual Identity & the Local Church:  Equipping for Effective Engagement. Based on global learning principles, this 8 hour interactive learning experience will challenge people to grapple with the development of practical action steps to help their church or agency be a safe place for adults and youth who are questioning their sexual identity or struggling with same-gender attraction.  It also provides resources for their family members and friends.
On Friday, Feb. 6th and Saturday, Feb. 7th, I will be in Sudbury to offer this Sexual Identity in the Local Church (SILC) seminar.  Grace Family Church has graciously offered to host the event in co-sponsorship with Glad Tidings.  Even though you may not work in a church or out of a specifically Christian agency, I believe you would find the seminar and the issues raised to be helpful.
All the specific details of this seminar can be found on our website at: HYPERLINK "http://www.newdirection.ca/content.xjp?id=447"http://www.newdirection.ca/content.xjp?id=447.  You can register on-line. Youll notice that there is a savings for groups and even more for early-bird registration.

17)  Family Policy Conference              March 12            Ottawa

The strength of the family does not merely affect the lives of its individual members; it has a vital impact on the social well-being of our nation. On March 12, internationally acclaimed speakers will gather in Ottawa to share insights and offer practical strategies on policy problems (learn more).
A discussion of Social Justice and the Family the days theme may yet be counterintuitive to some. The reality is that social welfare and family strength and the economy go hand in hand. One could go as far as to suggest that the economy wont do well when families dont thrive. So what helps raise families from poverty? How do we connect the dots between family strengths and welfare reduction? The days speakers will get us thinking and debating new ideas on social justice in Canada today.

22)  Heads-Up:  Celebration 2009          Sunday, June 7, 2009

January 2009

Dear Christian friends,

Plans are well underway for our fifth annual Celebration event at the Bell Park Amphitheatre. The date for Celebration 2009 is again the first Sunday of June -- Sunday, June 7 at 6:30 pm. As you probably remember, these celebration events are nation-wide in scope and hundreds of other churches in dozens of other cities across Canada will be celebrating in various ways during the same time period.

We are again asking local churches to transfer their evening service (if they have one) to the amphitheatre that night. We had a good turnout last summer and our desire is to fill the amphitheatre this summer for worship, fellowship and proclamation to the glory of God in the heart of our city.

It will again be a family event with lots of good music, focused prayer, a childrens puppet feature, a drama and a message of unity and hope. The 6:30 pm start recognizes the need of families with children to be home in good time for school the next day.

We encourage local churches to support this event in the following ways:

1. in prayer -- for the preparations, spirit of unity, good turnout, good weather, effective ministry etc.

2. in promotion -- by putting C2009 inserts in your bulletins on May 31 (one week before) as well as verbal and written announcements. Let me know how many you can use and well get them to you.

Thank you and may God bless you, your church family and your ministry to the Body of Christ in Sudbury!

1)    Choosing Abortion

Women hope abortion will eliminate the complexities of pregnancy, but generally dont realize the implications of the decision.
by Rusty Wright
When I met her at a media convention, she seemed so vibrant and alive, full of zest and eager to interact, an attractive woman with a bright smile and sparkling eyes. I would not have guessed the emotional anguish and physical torment that lay in her past. Gut wrenching stuff.
As Luana Stoltenberg told me her story, I learned shes been haunted by some choices she made earlier in life. Like many women, she had found herself with an unwanted pregnancy and confronting difficult decisions.
Luana Stoltenberg
Its a dilemma millions of women around the globe face each year. If youre in this situation, how will you support a baby? Will the father be responsible and help? What will your parents say? How might a child affect your career? Your social life? Your marriage plans? Ending the pregnancy might eliminate these complexities, or make them more manageable.
Luana faced that decision three times, the first at age seventeen. Each time she made the same choice, to terminate her pregnancy. She says she remembers the experiences vividly.
I lay on the cold table with no anesthetic for the pain, she recalls, staring at the ceiling, wishing I were someplace else. It seemed to last forever, and the pain was unbearable. No amount of anesthetic could dull the pain in my heart and mind.
The types of abortions I had were the vacuum aspirator method. I could hearby the increased labor of the suction machinewhen a part or limb of my baby was being extracted. Each time I tried to look at the jar with my [babys] remains they would push me back down. To this day I still hear that haunting suction sound.
When it was finished I was sent to a waiting room with the other girls. I was given a cup of juice and told I could leave in 20 minutes if I felt alright. I told them I felt fine, when in fact I had never felt worse. I just wanted out of there. On the drive home I was in extreme pain and bleeding profusely. I called them for help, but was told it wasnt their problem, to call my doctor.
Luana says that later, the reality that she would never see or hold those three children weighed heavily. Anger and depression set in. Alcohol abuse and drugs led to three suicide attempts. My life was a mess, she admits, and it was because of the choices I had made.
After some years, she made a different choice that turned her life around: She discovered a forgiving God and placed her faith in Him. She married and sought to start a family, but learned the abortions had rendered her infertile. The suction from the vacuum aspirator destroyed my tubes and ovaries. She says the suction damage led her to have a hysterectomy.
Her belief system and its certainty of forgiveness have helped her through her nightmare. She points to a statement by an early follower of Jesus that encapsulates her life: Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
Today Luana has dedicated herself to helping people understand the implications of decisions like those she faced. She has a passion for offering hope to those for whom life seems hopeless.

2)     Text of Rev. Lowery's inauguration benediction

By The Associated Press Jan. 20/09

Text of the benediction by Rev. Joseph Lowery during President Barack Obama's inauguration, as transcribed by CQ Transcriptions:

___

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou, who has brought us thus far along the way, thou, who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee.

Shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand true to thee, oh God, and true to our native land.

We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we've shared this day.

We pray now, oh Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration.

He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national, and indeed the global, fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hands, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations.

Our faith does not shrink though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.

For we know that, Lord, you are able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds, and deliver us fromthe exploitation of the poor, of the least of these, and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.

We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that yes we can work together to achieve a more perfect union.

And while we have sown the seeds of greed the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.

And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.

And as we leave this mountain top, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.

Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little angelic Sasha and Malia.

We go now to walk together as children, pledging that we won't get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone.

With your hands of power and your heart of love, help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nations shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree and none shall be afraid, when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen.

5)    Why did U.S. Catholics vote for pro-abortion Obama?
What We Have Here Is a Failure to Communicate (Catholic Teaching)
U.S. President Obama has been billed as the most extreme pro-abortion president ever. He famously said that he would not want his daughter and her husband "punished" by a baby. Yet 54 percent of Catholics voted for Obama for president. How could that be?

6)     Pelosi:  Fewer babies = stronger economy
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stirred up a hornet's nest by promoting the idea of spending of millions of dollars on birth control and abortion as part of the economic stimulus package.
"Contraception," argued Pelosi, "will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government." Her comments came on ABC's This Week when asked by host George Stephanopoulos how expanding "family-planning services" to the tune of millions of dollars will stimulate the economy. OneNewsNow sought reaction from Susan Fani, director of communications for the Catholic League.
"It's quite shocking, actually, that the Speaker of the House -- who claims to be Catholic -- would go on national television and claim that contraception would reduce the cost to the government," exclaims Fani. "It's just beyond words, really."

7)     An atheist returns to Christ
If you've ever wondered how people make the journey from Christianity to atheism and back again, Anne Rice offers some insights based on her own experience.  She also has some powerful and moving things to say about what it means to be a Christian in her most recent book, Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession (Knopf, 2008).
Probably most famous for writing about vampires, these days she is still a writer, but her subject matter has changed.

Sunday School Laughs
LOT'S WIFE:
The Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot 's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, when little Jason interrupted,
'My Mommy looked back once, while she was driving,' he announced triumphantly, 'and she turned into a telephone pole!'

GOOD SAMARITAN:

A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good Samaritan. She asked the class, 'If you saw a person lying on the Roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?'
A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, 'I think I'd throw up.'

DID NOAH FISH?

A Sunday school teacher asked, 'Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark ?'
'No,' replied Johnny. 'How could he, with just two worms.'

HIGHER POWER:

A Sunday school teacher said to her children, 'We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. But, there is a higher power. Can anybody tell me what it is?'
One child blurted out, 'Aces!'

MOSES AND THE RED SEA :

Nine-year-old Joey was asked by his mother what he had learned in Sunday School. 'Well, Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt when he got to the Red Sea , he had his army build a pontoon bridge and all the people walked across safely. Then, he radioed headquarters for reinforcements.
They sent bombers to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved.' 'Now, Joey, is that really what your teacher taught you?' his mother asked.
'Well, no, Mom. But, if I told it the way the teacher did, you'd never believe it!'

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD:

A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible; Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter. Little Rick was excited about the task -- but, he just couldn't remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Ricky was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, 'The Lord is my Shepherd, and that's all I need to know.'

UNANSWERED PRAYER?

The preacher's 5 year-old daughter noticed that her father always paused and bowed his head, for a moment, before starting his sermon.
One day, she asked him why.
'Well, Honey,' he began, proud that his daughter was so observant of his messages,
'I'm asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon.'
'How come He doesn't do it?' she asked.

BEING THANKFUL

A rabbi said to a precocious six-year-old boy, 'So your mother says your prayers for you each night? That's very commendable. What does she say?'
The little boy replied, 'Thank God he's in bed!'

UNTIMELY ANSWERED PRAYER

During the minister's prayer, one Sunday, there was a loud whistle from one of the back pews. Tommy's mother was horrified. She pinched him into silence and, after church, asked, 'Tommy, whatever made you do such a thing?'
Tommy answered, soberly, 'I asked God to teach me to whistle, and He just then did!'

TIME TO PRAY

A pastor asked a little boy if he said his prayers every night.
'Yes, sir,' the boy replied.
'And, do you always say them in the morning, too?' the pastor asked. 'No sir,' the boy replied. 'I ain't scared in the daytime.'

ALL MEN / ALL GIRLS?

When my daughter, Kelli, said her bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member, every friend, and every animal (current and past).
For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayer, Kelli would say,
'And all girls.' As this soon became part of her nightly routine, to include this at the end, my curiosity got the best of me and I asked her,
'Kelli, Why do you always add the part about all girls?'
Her response, 'Because we always finish our prayers by saying 'All Men'!'

SAY A PRAYER

Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother's house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served.
When Little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away.
'Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer.' Said his mother
'I don't have to,' The boy replied.
'Of course, you do,' his mother insisted. 'We say a prayer before eating, at our house'
'That's our house,' Johnny explained. 'But this is Grandma's house and she knows how to cook!

Little Boys Explanation of God

It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista , CA . He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to 'explain God.' I wonder if any of us could have done as well?
EXPLANATION OF GOD:
'One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn't make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn't have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.'
'God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off.'
'God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.'
'Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista . At least there aren't any who come to our church.'
'Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K.'
'His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important..'
'You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.'
'You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God!
Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.'
'If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids.'
'But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases.
And...that's why I believe in God.'

2)Story about choices

AFTER A FEW OF THE USUAL SUNDAY EVENING HYMNS,

THE CHURCH'S PASTOR SLOWLY STOOD UP,

WALKED OVER TO THE PULPIT AND,

BEFORE HE GAVE HIS SERMON FOR THE EVENING,

HE BRIEFLY INTRODUCED A GUEST MINISTER

WHO WAS IN THE SERVICE THAT EVENING.

IN THE INTRODUCTION, THE PASTOR TOLD THE

CONGREGATION THAT THE GUEST MINISTER WAS

ONE OF HIS DEAREST CHILDHOOD FRIENDS AND

THAT HE WANTED HIM TO HAVE A FEW MOMENTS

TO GREET THE CHURCH AND SHARE WHATEVER

HE FELT WOULD BE APPROPRIATE FOR THE SERVICE..

WITH THAT, AN ELDERLY MAN STEPPED UP TO THE

PULPIT AND BEGAN TO SPEAK.

'A FATHER, HIS SON, AND A FRIEND OF HIS SON WERE

SAILING OFF THE PACIFIC COAST ,' HE BEGAN.

'WHEN A FAST APPROACHING STORM BLOCKED ANY

ATTEMPT TO GET BACK TO THE SHORE.

THE WAVES WERE SO HIGH, THAT EVEN THOUGH THE

FATHER WAS AN EXPERIENCED SAILOR, HE COULD NOT

KEEP THE BOAT UPRIGHT AND THE THREE WERE SWEPT

INTO THE OCEAN AS THE BOAT CAPSIZED.'

THE OLD MAN HESITATED FOR A MOMENT,

MAKING EYE CONTACT WITH TWO TEENAGERS WHO WERE,

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE SERVICE BEGAN,

LOOKING SOMEWHAT INTERESTED IN HIS STORY.

THE AGED MINISTER CONTINUED WITH HIS STORY,

'GRABBING A RESCUE LINE, THE FATHER HAD TO MAKE THE

MOST EXCRUCIATING DECISION OF HIS LIFE: TO WHICH BOY

WOULD HE THROW THE OTHER END OF THE LIFE LINE.

HE ONLY HAD SECONDS TO MAKE THE DECISION.

THE FATHER KNEW THAT HIS SON WAS A CHRISTIAN AND

HE, ALSO, KNEW THAT HIS SON'S FRIEND WAS NOT.

THE AGONY OF HIS DECISION COULD NOT BE MATCHED BY

THE TORRENT OF WAVES.

AS THE FATHER YELLED OUT, 'I LOVE YOU, SON!'

HE THREW OUT THE LIFE LINE TO HIS SON'S FRIEND.

BY THE TIME THE FATHER HAD PULLED THE FRIEND BACK

TO THE CAPSIZED BOAT, HIS SON HAD DISAPPEARED BENEATH

THE RAGING SWELLS INTO THE BLACK OF NIGHT.

`            HIS BODY WAS NEVER RECOVERED.

BY THIS TIME, THE TWO TEENAGERS WERE SITTING UP

STRAIGHT IN THE PEW, ANXIOUSLY WAITING FOR THE NEXT

WORDS TO COME OUT OF THE OLD MINISTER'S MOUTH.

'THE FATHER,' HE CONTINUED, 'KNEW HIS SON WOULD

STEP INTO ETERNITY WITH JESUS AND HE COULD NOT

BEAR THE THOUGHT OF HIS SON'S FRIEND STEPPING INTO

AN ETERNITY WITHOUT JESUS.. THEREFORE, HE SACRIFICED

HIS SON TO SAVE THE SON'S FRIEND. '

HOW GREAT IS THE LOVE OF GOD THAT HE SHOULD DO THE

SAME FOR US. OUR HEAVENLY FATHER SACRIFICED HIS ONLY

BEGOTTEN SON THAT WE COULD BE SAVED. I URGE YOU TO

ACCEPT HIS OFFER TO RESCUE YOU AND TAKE A HOLD OF THE

LIFE LINE HE IS THROWING OUT TO YOU IN THIS SERVICE.'

WITH THAT, THE OLD MAN TURNED AND SAT BACK DOWN IN

HIS CHAIR AS SILENCE FILLED THE ROOM.

THE PASTOR AGAIN WALKED SLOWLY TO THE PULPIT AND

DELIVERED A BRIEF SERMON WITH AN INVITATION AT THE

END. HOWEVER, NO ONE RESPONDED TO THE APPEAL.

WITHIN MINUTES AFTER THE SERVICE ENDED, THE TWO

TEENAGERS WERE AT THE OLD MAN'S SIDE.

'THAT WAS A NICE STORY,' POLITELY STATED ONE OF

THEM,'BUT I DON'T THINK IT WAS VERY REALISTIC FOR A

FATHER TO GIVE UP HIS ONLY SON'S LIFE IN HOPES THAT

THE OTHER BOY WOULD BECOME A CHRISTIAN.'

'WELL, YOU'VE GOT A POINT THERE,' THE OLD MAN REPLIED,

GLANCING DOWN AT HIS WORN BIBLE. A BIG SMILE BROADENED

HIS NARROW FACE. HE ONCE AGAIN LOOKED UP AT THE BOYS

AND SAID, 'IT SURE ISN'T VERY REALISTIC, IS IT?  BUT,

I'M STANDING HERE TODAY TO TELL YOU THAT STORY GIVES

ME A GLIMPSE OF WHAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE FOR GOD

TO GIVE UP HIS SON FOR ME.

YOU SEE...

I WAS THAT FATHER AND YOUR PASTOR IS MY SON'S FRIEND.'

3)      A Dogs Purpose

______________________________________

Subject: A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old).

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply. Love generously.... Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Remember, i f a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY! Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or play with it

Pee on it and walk away

 6)  OBITUARY OF THE LATE MR. COMMON SENSE

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.
No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth
records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such
 valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain
Why the early bird gets the worm
 Life isn't always fair
 Maybe it was my fault

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies:

Don't spend more than you can earn

 And reliable strategies:

Adults, not children, are in charge

His health began to deteriorate when parents
attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves
had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It
declined even further when schools were required to get
parental consent to administer Tylenol, sun lotion or a
band-aid to a student but could not inform parents when a
student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses
and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when it became
punishable for you to defend yourself from a burglar in
your own home but the burglar could sue you for assault.

He began to lose ground rapidly when
well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in
place. Reports of a 6 -year- old boy charged with sexual
harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from
school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired
for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his
 condition.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live
after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of
coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was
 promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents,
Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his Daughter,
 Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My
Rights, Someone Else Is To blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few
realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this
on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.
