Sudbury Christian Messenger - March 11, 2007

The full edition of the Sudbury Christian Messenger
for March 11, 2007
The
Sudbury Christian Messenger seeks to engage our
culture about issues that affect Christians,
Canadians, and citizens of our
world.
Pastor Jeremy Mahood defined "engaging" as "dialoguing" (March 12/07 Message at All Nations Church). It is the prayer of ACES (Active Christians Engaging Society), that the information in our e mail newsletter and on our website, www.sudburychristian.ca, will give you access to some of the information you need in order to engage/dialogue with our culture, as we stand up for our faith and faith beliefs. Pastor Jeremy Mahood also said that as we take a stand for God, we will be ridiculed. From experience I can share that ridicule will make us more reliant on God, wiser, stronger, surer.
God bless your journey to God, with God, Diane Ikonen, Editor
God has called us to be peculiar--to stand out from the rest of the world as living proof of His power and His love (1 Pet. 2:9).

Canada Needs an Anti-War Government
Every Canadian must oppose the warmongering of the Party in power and its apologists, and declare boldly: "This war is an imperialist war and is not conducted in my name. Bring the troops home now! No funds for aggression and war. Canadians want an anti-war government that defends the sovereignty of nations and the rights of all! Canada, get out of Afghanistan! Canada, get out of NATO, NORAD and all military contact with U.S. imperialism!"

10. Women of the Future Request for Women from Ruby Lougheed Yawney May 16
Once again I am part of the organization of Woman of The Future, which is an Annual Conference held this year May 16 from 9 am to 4 pm for young women, from grade 7 through grade 10, identified by their teachers or their school as being at risk of underperforming for a variety of reasons or at risk or dropping out of school or not continuing on a career path.
I am looking for inspirational woman (we really need some younger woman if possible, as the closer to the young woman's ages, the better to inspire as the girls can relate a little more to them) to act as facilitators for the young ladies during the day. The facilitor is to share their own story with the young ladies at their table (usually 7 young ladies) and encourage participation, interaction, getting them to engage in the days events and also keeping an eye on their wereabouts.
Woman in trades, professionals, entrepreneurs and non-traditional woman's fields and woman who are outgoing enough to play the role of facilitor are all welcome. I think it is important that we look to the Christian community to act as leaders and role models for our next generation.
Could you please help circulate this request for volunteers?
Thanking you in advance, and with sincere appreciation,

Mainstream Media: Pre-term Baby's Survival Will Have Big Impact on Abortion Debate
By Gudrun Schultz
FLORIDA, United States, February 22, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The survival of pre-term baby Amillia Taylor, at 21 weeks gestation the youngest know child to survive premature birth, has produced an increase in media debate on the abortion issue.
Mainstream media outlets have acknowledged that the baby's life raises "big questions" about legal abortion. Weighing less than 10oz and just nine ½ inches long, Amillia was born one month earlier than the date considered viable for most babies, 25 weeks. About half of the babies born at 25 weeks will survive. Abortion laws are often based on an assumption of viability, with the cut-off being set at the point where babies would be likely to survive outside the womb.
"The fact that she has survived and grown to more than four pounds, and is about to go home, is a miracle, yes, but a miracle that may have an effect on the debate over abortion. And it may change what people think about life."
Dan Harris, pro-abortion reporter for ABC, pointed out that in most of the country, Amillia could have been legally aborted well past the point of her birth.
Personally, I think it is not chance that this little one survived at this time. Currently, Canadians are looking at amending our "non-legal" abortion laws (really we have no law) to permit abortions up to 20 weeks gestation in the hopes of getting some controls on the abortion situation. This recent story makes me realize that we need to start thinking pro-actively. The day of being able to save a premature infant at any stage may be closer than we think. Increments such as:
outlawing certain procedures, such as partial-birth abortion
protecting survivors of abortion and
laws that require abortion-seeking women to notify family members or
requiring that doctors inform women about the health risks associated with the decision they are making.
require waiting periods of 24 hours for women to consider this information carefully and reflect on their decision.
strict limits on free-standing abortion facilities,
limits placed on abortion funding
All these, would help protect these defenseless little ones as well as their mothers from physical and psychological harm.
Comments posted on Newsbusters pointed out that at 35 weeks from conception, Amillia is still three weeks from her natural birth date and could legally be aborted in Canada if she had remained in her mother's womb.
For Life,
Nancy Bartz (The Life Centre)

3. Religious Liberty Alert and Request
2. Vietnam: Urgent Prayer and Advocacy Request
(Sources: Compass Direct News, Human Rights Watch, Advocates Asia)
After taking steps towards human rights development and progress in 2006, resulting in exemption from the United State’s Countries of Particular Concern list, Human Rights Watch reports the Vietnamese government recently launched one of its worst crackdowns on peaceful dissidents in 20 years.
Human rights groups from across Canada and around the world are publicly condemning the arrests and imprisonment of Father Nguyen Van Ly, a Catholic priest and two Christian human rights lawyers, Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan.
Father Nguyen Van Ly is an internationally-known religious leader in Vietnam and former prisoner of conscience. He has been advocating for freedom of expression and worship in Vietnam for almost thirty years. He is also one of the founders of “Block 8406”, a movement launched in April 2006 when hundreds of Vietnamese citizens signed public petitions calling for democracy and human rights. Father Ly was arrested on February 19, 2007 for “making anti-government propaganda” and for “contacts with several political reactionary opportunists at home and abroad to fight against the state, denying the leading role of the (Vietnamese Communist) Party”.
Human Rights lawyers Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan were arrested on March 6, 2007. Nguyen Van Dai founded the Committee for Human Rights in Vietnam in 2006 and is an elder in his local Christian & Missionary Alliance Church. Le Thi Cong Nhan has served as spokesperson for the Dang Thang Tien Vietnam Party (Vietnam Progression Party), which is one of several opposition parties created in 2006. Both lawyers have also been charged with carrying out propaganda against the Vietnamese government.
The charges against Father Ly, Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan, fall under article 88 of the Vietnamese Penal Code. If convicted, each faces up to 20 years in prison.
Of additional concern is the health of Father Ly. Due to inadequate medical care and harsh detention conditions, it has been reported that his health is rapidly deteriorating.
These recent arrests are indicative of the Vietnamese government’s continuing intolerance of peaceful dissidents and repression of freedom of expression. This is a clear contravention of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights of which Vietnam is a signatory.
TAKE ACTION:
A peaceful demonstration against persecution of political dissidents in Vietnam is taking place in Ottawa this Sunday, March 11, 2007.
The Vietnamese Canadian Federation, in collaboration with the Vietnamese Association for Human Rights of Ontario and the Vietnamese communities in Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa, will hold the demonstration in front of the Embassy of Vietnam, 470 Wilbrod St., Ottawa, to protest against the recent arrest of Father Nguyen Van Ly, Nguyen Van Dai, Le Thi Cong Nhan and other political dissidents.
The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada will be attending the demonstration.
PRAY:
Pray that Father Nguyen Van Ly, Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan will be immediately and unconditionally released from custody.
Pray for Father Nguyen Van Ly’s health.
Pray for Vietnam and for an end to these politically-motivated human rights violations.

WRITE:
Letter writing can be an effective tool for advocacy. At this time, we encourage you to write to Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, encouraging the Canadian government to engage with Vietnam on the issue of human rights, and to advocate for the release of Father Nguyen Van Ly, Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan.

Sample Letter:
Dear Minister,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent arrest and detention of a Catholic priest and two human rights lawyers in Vietnam.
Father Nguyen Van Ly is an internationally-known religious leader in Vietnam and former prisoner of conscience. He has been calling for freedom of expression and freedom of worship in Vietnam for almost thirty years. He is also one of the founders of “Block 8406”, a democracy movement launched in April of 2006 when hundreds of Vietnamese citizens signed public petitions calling for democracy and human rights.
Nguyen Van Dai is one of Vietnam’s few human rights lawyers. He founded the Committee for Human Rights in Vietnam in 2006 and is an elder in his local Christian & Missionary Alliance Church.
Le Thi Cong Nhan is also a human rights lawyer and has served for spokesperson for the Dang Thang Tien Vietnam Party (Vietnam Progression Party), which is one of several opposition parties created in 2006.
Father Ly and both lawyers have been charged with carrying out propaganda against the Vietnamese government under article 88 of the Penal Code. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison.
I believe that these arrests were politically motivated due to the dissidents’ involvement in appeals for democracy and human rights.
I appeal to the government of Canada to raise its concern about this situation with the government of Vietnam. I respectfully request that you intervene on behalf of Father Nguyen Van Ly, Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan, urging their immediate release.
Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
(Your name)

2. The Choice Is Yours
"Choose you this day whom ye will serve."
(Joshua 24:15)
Choosing to side with God's Word is a continual challenge. It's not some- thing you do just once. It's a process of choosing to believe and act upon the Word of God over and over in every circumstance.
That's what everyone has to do. Years ago I decided I was going to choose Jesus. Since then I've had to choose Him again and again in situations every day. I've chosen Him as my Lord and Savior. I've chosen Him as my Healer. I've chosen Him as my Financier. I've chosen Him as head of my household. I've chosen Him as head of my ministry. And I still have to choose Him moment by moment.
Sometimes that choice gets tough, but God has promised it will never get too tough. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, He says, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able." What the Lord is saying is that He will not allow you to be subjected to a temptation you're unable to overcome. With every temptation, He'll make a way of escape. He'll ALWAYS make sure you have a choice.
The devil doesn't come tempt you while God is off somewhere else, unaware of what is happening to you. The Spirit of God is constantly there with you, providing you with the way to overcome. In other words, God matches even the toughest temptations with the weapons and power you need to conquer them. He always makes it possible for you to choose life.
So choose to walk in love. Choose to walk by faith. Choose to live by the Word. Jesus is the Way! Choose Him!
Scripture Study: Joshua 24:14-24
3. - Called to Be Peculiar
"I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world."
(John 17:15-16)
Being peculiar. That's not something most of us work to achieve, is it? But, you know, we should.
God has called us to be peculiar--to stand out from the rest of the world as living proof of His power and His love (1 Pet. 2:9).
He doesn't, for example, want us to share the ailments of the world. He doesn't want us to share their sickness and poverty and failure. He's never wanted that for His people.
He gave us a physical illustration of that during the time the nation of Israel was held captive in Egypt. Pharaoh had refused to set the Israelites free, so God had allowed a thick darkness to cover the whole land. The darkness was so dreadful throughout Egypt that no one moved for three days.
"But," says Exodus 10:23, "all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings."
What a thrilling example of how God wants us to live. We should be glorifying God by the miraculously victorious lives we lead. We should constantly have people telling us, "I've heard how God healed you," or "I've heard how God prospered you and saved your children!"
So don't hold back. Put the Word of God to work in your life and dare to receive the rich blessings that belong to those who believe. Start using the Word to draw boundaries around your life, to paint spiritual warning signs for the devil. Signs that say:
Off Limits! According to God's Word, I don't belong to you anymore. My family doesn't belong to you. My health doesn't belong to you. My money doesn't belong to you. My ministry doesn't belong to you. I belong to a different kingdom. Now, back off in Jesus' Name!
Does that sound a little peculiar? Good. That's exactly what God has called you to be!
Scripture Study: Exodus 10:20-29
4. Practice patience
People who cause you problems also give you something of real and lasting positive value. They provide you with the opportunity to practice and build your patience.
Patience is a profoundly powerful and useful thing to have. It can bring real value into your life in almost any situation.
With patience, you can achieve a thousand times more than what you could achieve without it. With patience, you can listen, learn, work and prosper instead of lashing out at every frustration.
Patience enables you to see and to experience rich treasures that you otherwise would have missed completely. Patience gives you the ability to forge deep and meaningful connections with others.
Practice patience, and you avoid costly careless mistakes. Live with patience, and you have the persistence to create great things.
Be truly thankful for each opportunity you receive to strengthen your patience. For it will surely bring new richness to your life.
