Sudbury Christian Messenger for Feb. 04, 2010

Sudbury Christian Messenger for Feb. 04, 2010
When you reach the end of your rope
You will find the hem of his garment...

A dream begins as a seed in your mind, nourish it with optimism and make it a part of your life!

O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.
            ( Psalms 5:12 *NKJV )

The leadership team of A.C.E.S (Active Christians Engaging Society) believes in the power of prayer and encourage Sudbury area Christians to pray for our city and country. As we look to the Bible for instruction we can read the apostle Paul's encouragement to Timothy, as he leads the church in Ephesus, (1 Timothy 2:1-4), TO PRAY FIRST, with requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.....

Petition Request
1.  Petition to Free the Notre Dame 88

Fr. Jenkins,

Right now 88 pro-life activists (known as the ND88) are facing charges for “trespassing” onto the University of Notre Dame in May of 2009.

It is a source of the gravest scandal that this situation persists with the active cooperation of Notre Dame.

The ND88 were arrested for peacefully protesting the university’s decision to honor the most pro-abortion U.S. president in history at this year’s commencement. In many cases, their “protest” took the form of walking on your campus, praying the rosary, and holding pro-life signs. For this “crime” they were specifically targeted by Notre Dame’s security police, handcuffed, and dragged away and put in jail like common criminals.

Now these 88 peaceful pro-life heroes, many of whom are elderly, are facing up to a year in prison and a $5,000 fine, in addition to the many hardships and uncertainties involved in the trial process.

And yet, there is an easy and completely painless solution to this unconscionable situation. You, Fr. Jenkins, on behalf of Notre Dame, could publicly request that the charges against the ND88 be dropped.

Not only is such a request likely be heeded by the prosecutorial authorities, but it would go a long way to restoring Notre Dame's tarnished image in the eyes of the pro-life and Catholic world.

Indeed, it is extremely shocking and disturbing that, despite repeated requests to do so, Notre Dame has not yet intervened in this way.

Our Lady’s University has no business cooperating in the prosecutions of pro-life individuals whose only crime is having prayed on the campus of a Catholic university, and standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

Therefore we respectfully implore the University of Notre Dame to immediately and publicly request that the charges against the ND88 be dropped.

Sincerely,

SIGN THE PETITION (click here)

If you were going to take your sweetheart out for Valentine’s Day anyways, why not spread that love a little further?  TO HAITI WITH LOVE…join me (Sarah Craig) Thursday, Feb 11 for an evening of Caribbean Steel Drums, Pina Coladas, Swing Dancing and Fine Dining.  All in GENEROUS fashion!

It will be sponsored (in part) by First Baptist Church, Garson and New Life Christian Centre, Chelmsford.

The money will be going to World Vision.

A tax receipt for half of the $50.00 per ticket will be provided

There will be a spaghetti dinner, door prizes, bands, and dancing.

It will be a fun night.

Ten people who are going on a mission trip to help Haitians will be coordinating it.  Your money will be brought to Haiti by Sudburians, and used wisely there in a needy community.

BTW:  On Feb 21 the Sudbury team of 10 are going to Haiti to help with earthquake relief in Port-au-Prince.

We are going to Cap Hatien in the north of Haiti.  It is the second city of Haiti and was not affected by the earthquake.  The team is staying with a local pastor there and helping with the relief efforts as they reach out to the rest of the country.  This trip was planned in the Fall and we feel it is AMAZING timing to be going to Haiti when the eyes of all the world are focused there.   We will not be going into downtown Port au Prince like the CNN reporters!

If you’re interested in the story, or in making a donation (monetary or medical/educational supplies which we will PERSONALLY bring to Haiti in our suitcases) contact Sarah at 919-5072, sarahjoycraig@hotmail.com OR team leader Pastor Stan and Karen Ball of ‘First Baptist Church of Sudbury’ 897-3916  stanleyball@gmail.com

9. CONNECTING WITH "DIFFICULT" PEOPLE Toronto Feb. 23

The Centre for Spirituality at Work invites you to this workshop

with Bhupinder Gill, M.Sc., R.N.

Tuesday Feb 23, 2010
7:30 – 9:30 pm
At the Toronto Grace, near Yonge & Bloor, Toronto

Earlybird fee: Tues Feb 16, 2010

This evening, be introduced to a technique to help you connect in person or by telephone with people whom you perceive to be “difficult.” These people may be your co-workers or clients, neighbours or family members. You will learn how move to a place of compassion for people when you come to realize that everything that anyone does or says is to meet a specific need they have, and not just because they want to give you a “hard time”. This technique is based on Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s life’s work developing non-violent communication (NVC), also known as compassionate communication (www.cnvc.org <</span>http://www.cnvc.org> ).

BHUPINDER GILL, M.Sc., R.N. works in the early psychosis unit at The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She has been studying NVC for more than 5 years and is a trainer candidate for certification in non-violent communication. Bo has taught non-violent communication within various organizations and is a practitioner in both her professional and personal life. She was attracted to NVC because of its spiritual perspective and has been practising santmat meditation for over 20 years (www.knowthyselfassoul.com <</span>http://www.knowthyselfassoul.com> ). Contact Bo at bhupindergll@yahoo.com.

REGISTRATION: Program fee of $30 received by Tues Feb 16 or $40 following. For cancellations, you may substitute another person for no additional fee. To register, mail a cheque payable to: Centre for Spirituality at Work, Box 100, 236 Guildwood Parkway, Toronto M1E 1P7. Or register and pay for this program securely and confidentially by credit card through PayPal at www.SpiritualityAtWork.org <</span>http://www.SpiritualityAtWork.org> . If times are a little tough financially right now and you’d like to attend, please mail a cheque before the earlybird date for whatever you can manage and pre-register confidentially through sherry@spiritualityatwork.org.

LOCATION: In the 2nd floor chapel of our partner, the Toronto Grace Hospital workplace, 650 Church St. at the S/W corner of Bloor St. Just a few minutes walk from the Yonge-Bloor TTC station. Metered parking is on Church and Hayden Streets, and a paid lot at the Grace. Use the main northwest entrance. www.TorontoGrace.org <</span>http://www.TorontoGrace.org>

18.  Fundraising Request for Cambrian College “Nursing Without Borders”

I recently learned about "Nursing Without Borders" and the plans of an impressive group of students in the Cambrian College Nursing program to travel to India in April 2010 to work in a community hospital, a leprosy centre and in the jungle.  What an invaluable experience for these students - a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

The "Nursing Without Borders Bursary" has been established with Cambrian Foundation to help students with expenses such as airfare and insurance.  Donations to the Cambrian Foundation are greatly appreciated.  Perhaps, there are some faith communities who would be keenly interested in supporting such a cause.

It is one concrete way to help students be better health professionals and individuals as a result of this amazing experience.  Thanks so much.

Best Regards,
Lori Adams

1.  Sudbury Minga for Maasai BENEFIT SOIREE            April 17

Minga ... coming together for the common good

On April 17, 2010, Sudbury Minga for Maasai hosts a benefit soirée at Bryston’s on the Park in Copper Cliff. This exciting evening of dinner plus silent and live auctions will benefit a village in the Masai Mara region of Kenya.  We invite you to participate in this very special evening – a night to celebrate our community and to come together to help build another. From one village to another, this is a chance to celebrate Sudbury’s talents while, at the same time, working in partnership to empower another community.

Sudbury Minga for Maasai, a local Free The Children Adopt a Village project, has been partnered with the holistic development project at Pimbiniet. This community is home to 2,200 people who need clean water, adequate food, schools and accessible health care.  To date, Sudbury Minga for Maasai has raised approximately $50,000 – all from local partners – but we still have a way to go before we reach our goal of $117,600. Suspended club sidesteps prohibitions on tabling
By Stephen Davis
Published: Jan 31

Conservative McGill helped Choose Life defy their suspended club status today with a display marking the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that struck down abortion laws in Canada.

SSMU Council voted to suspend the club’s status on November 12. Since the suspension entailed the loss of Choose Life’s tabling privileges, Conservative McGill booked a table for the pro-life group to feature their display at the Y-intersection.

Ignatieff urges Harper not to exclude abortion, contraception from G8 health initiative

Tue Feb 2, 10:44 PM   By Joan Bryden , The Canadian Press

OTTAWA - Michael Ignatieff is urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper not to exclude abortion and contraception from his plan to become an international champion of women's and children's health.

The Liberal leader sought assurances Tuesday that Harper's agenda to improve the lot of women and children in the world's poorest countries will include funding for all reproductive health services.

"Women are entitled to the full gamut of reproductive health services and that includes termination of pregnancy and contraception," Ignatieff told a Liberal-sponsored roundtable discussion on foreign aid and international development.

Late Tuesday, Liberal MP Paul Szabo said he was caught off guard by the announcement and claims Ignatieff doesn't have a consensus for the stand among Liberals.

"I am a pro-life MP and there are many of my colleagues in the Liberal caucus who will protect the unborn in their decisions as Parliamentarians, and should matters come before the House they will continue to act accordingly," Szabo told the anti-abortion website, LifeSiteNews.

Nevertheless, Ignatieff said foreign aid involving women is "the last place to start playing politics" or injecting ideology.

"These are simple objectives and let's keep the ideology out of this and move forward."

A spokesman for Harper said the Liberal leader is the one who is needlessly politicizing the issue.

"This has nothing to do with abortion, in any way, shape or form," said Dimitri Soudas, accusing Liberals of "fear-mongering" and raising "red herrings."

Soudas said Harper and the other G8 leaders have "one clear objective and that is saving lives of vulnerable children and mothers in the developing world."

"Stirring up old debates with a purpose of fear-mongering, with a purpose of playing cheap politics, is very, very unfortunate on this particular issue. And that's what we think he's doing."

1.  New IPPF Document Pushes Adolescent "Sexual Rights"

By Samantha Singson

Volume 13, Number 7 January 28, 2010

(NEW YORK – C-FAM)  In its new report "Stand and Deliver," the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is demanding that governments, religious institutions and society at large provide "comprehensive sexuality education" for children as young as ten years old.

In a foreword, Bert Koenders of the Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, which helped fund the publication, asserts that, "Young people have the right to be fully informed about sexuality and to have access to contraceptives and other services. These rights are enshrined in various internationally agreed human rights convention and treaties, but – unfortunately – they are still not universally respected."

…  IPPF contends that comprehensive sexuality education is necessary to encourage young people's "self-esteem, thoughtful decision-making and negotiation skills and it helps them to develop satisfying and pleasurable sexual lives." Moreover, IPPF expounds that the "power" of comprehensive sexuality education "to challenge traditional gender roles" must not be underestimated.

The IPPF report stresses granting young people "unconstrained" access to sexuality education and services, "free from administrative restrictions and obstacles," like requiring health providers to obtain parental or spousal permission before providing contraceptives. IPPF demands that young people be able to "obtain the services they need and want, unconstrained by psychological, attitudinal, cultural or social factors."

IPPF targets religion and religious groups as one of the main barriers to adolescent access to sexuality education and sexual and reproductive "services."  IPPF criticizes that many religious teachings "deny the pleasurable and positive aspects of sex and limited guidelines for sexual education often focus on abstinence before marriage," which IPPF claims has been ineffective in many settings.

According to IPPF, religious institutions – like the Catholic Church and Islamic schools – need to be "pragmatic" to accommodate young people as "sexual beings" and amend their teachings to "find a way of explaining and providing guidance on issues of sex and sexual relationships among young people, which supports rather than denies their experiences and needs."

Sexual education has been a topic of heated debates at the United Nations, with many critics fearing that parental rights to educate their children will be violated.  Just last year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) released a set of sexual education guidelines that were met with such staunch resistance from conservatives that the organization was forced to take down the document from its website and review.

Critics expect more debates over "comprehensive sexuality education" to flare up in the coming months as UN Commission season gets underway.

2.  Top Legal Scholar Warns Abortion Issue Can Divide a Nation

By Susan Yoshihara, Ph.D.

Volume 13, Number 7   January 28, 2010

(NEW YORK – C-FAM)  In Washington last Saturday night, a top legal scholar from Princeton University said that the United States (U.S.) Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in 1973 led to deep societal divisions as well as to unprecedented political and religious alliances, which will be called on to lead a struggle for the “soul” of the nation once the decision is overturned.

“Abortion and embryo-destructive research are at the heart of the divide between the nation’s major political parties,” Professor Robert George said, galvanizing support for the pro-life plank in the Republican Party while drawing disaffected Democrats to the Republican camp…

UN human rights experts say that George’s remarks hold important political and social considerations for other nations now under pressure by UN staff and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to weaken legal protection of the unborn based upon false claims that they are necessary to uphold UN human rights agreements. They point to Colombia which liberalized its laws in 2006 subsequent to a lawsuit backed by the New York law firm Center for Reproductive Rights. Other cases include Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic which successfully fended off pressure last year from the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and various NGOs to overturn their laws.

George concluded that the 2012 U.S. presidential election “will almost certainly be the decisive one when it comes to the Supreme Court and the future of Roe v. Wade.”

A Small Group Study Guide

Problems like poverty, addiction, and homelessness are serious and complex. Passion alone won’t solve them. Seek Social Justice is a six-lesson DVD small group study guide that provides a framework for understanding and engaging human need. Combining real-world examples of effective action with the wisdom of Christian leaders like Chuck Colson, Al Mohler, and Marvin Olasky, it will challenge your ideas about social justice and how to transform lives in need.

“I am grateful to The Heritage Foundation for including the needs of the poor in this innovative new study resource—and for inviting and encouraging us to translate our good intentions into actions that really make a difference.”

3.  Priestly Duty  by Skip Moen, D. Phil.

“For the lips of the priest should guard knowledge; and they should seek the law from his mouth; for he is the messenger of YHWH of hosts.” Malachi 2:7

Guard – The Hebrew verb shamar means “to watch over, to guard, to keep, to preserve and to care for.”  It’s the same verb that described Adam and Havvah’s assignment in the Garden.  We expect a priest to do these things when it comes to God’s Word.  But take one more look at this verse.  Do you find something unusual?  When we think about God’s Word, we associate shamar with a heart activity.  We think of guarding God’s Word as a inner operation like memorizing, honoring and studying.  But what does God say through Malachi?  “The lips of the priest” are associated with shamar.  This can only mean one thing – speaking.  From God’s perspective, guarding knowledge is about what I say.  As a priest, if I am not speaking God’s truth, my inner spiritual life doesn’t seem to matter much.

This apparent disconnect is resolved when we realize that the role of the priest is to act as intercessor between God and the people.  He is called upon to speak to God on behalf of the congregation.  His job is to plead our case, direct our worship and faithfully communicate God’s instructions.  He is the public servant of the Lord.  What he says matters a great deal.  So, God instructs His priests to guard knowledge.  “Be very careful about your words for with your words you direct My people.  Know what you are saying.”
Malachi’s revelation creates two big issues for the Church today.  The first is obvious.  The priest (or whatever title we wish to assign) must know God’s instructions and speak them truthfully.  Unfortunately, eighteen centuries of Christian syncretism leave most of our leaders in a position where God’s instructions are no longer guarded.  The lips of most priests speak half the truth, unintentionally to be sure, but nevertheless, a tragic mistake.  We are led astray by misunderstood messages.

The second issue is the congregation’s expectation of the role of our priests.  We think they are leaders of the Body.  We think they are managers of the membership.  We think they should direct the decisions.  In other words, we put them in charge of everything.  That is not God’s assignment.  Priests are first and foremost intercessors on our behalf.  They are not pulpit pundits, committee counselors or budget barons.  They are called to be like those apostles of the first century who gave up running the “church” in order to devote themselves to prayer and the study of God’s Word.

We have left our priests and pastors in an impossible position.  We have forgotten what God called them to do – know Him, intercede for us and speak His truth.  What would happen if we followed the model of the apostles?  Well, for one thing, the congregation would have to take on all the other roles of the church.  We would have to act on God’s instructions instead of sitting in the pews.
Topical Index:  priest, guard, shamar, Malachi 2:7

1.  4MyCanada requests letters to PM Harper and Bev Oda

SOMETHING GOOD COULD GO BAD, UNLESS WE LIFT OUR VOICE:

PRIME MINISTER HARPERS INITIATIVES TO LOWER INFANT AND MATERNAL MORTALITY RATE IS BEING INVADED BY PRO-ABORTIONISTS

UPDATE: This week Prime Minister Harper announced an amazing initiative of compassion to lower infant and maternal mortality. He spoke of investing in clean water, vaccines, nutrition, health care worker training and primary health care training for moms.

Word has it that people at CIDA and in the pro-abortion community may have a different idea about how to lower infant mortality: kill the baby before they can get sick. Abort them. At a news conference with International Cooperation Minister Bev Oda a radical abortion lobby group was there pushing this agenda. We want to see Canada be a lead voice for life and compassion globally, not abortion.

What this needs is prayer and phone calls. Please take a minute to e-mail Prime Minister Harper and Minister Oda and ask them to implement Prime Minister Harpers original ideas of clean water, vaccines, nutrition, health care training etc., not destroying children before they can be born. Thank you.

Please keep this in prayer as well, prayer is powerful.

Dear ACES Friends,

I need to set up my office properly, which will be a great help in getting some work done for ACES website.

Does anyone have a spare 2-drawer filing cabinet? It does not have to be pretty, just free of mold or mildew.

Also, could someone loan me a paper shredder?

Thanks, team.

1.  Inter-church gathering

An inter-church gathering was well attended when someone
suddenly cried
"FIRE!"
The Methodists gathered in a corner to pray.
The Baptists hollered "Everyone in the water !"
The Lutherans nailed a paper to the door declaring fire was evil.
The Episcopalians formed a procession and marched out in an
orderly manner.
The Unitarians concluded the fire had as much right to be there
as anyone.
The Christian Scientists agreed there really wasn't a fire.
The 7th Day Adventists said it was "the vengeance of an angry
God."
The Presbyterians formed a committee to study the problem.
The Catholics passed the plate to cover the damages.

The janitor grabbed a fire extinguisher and put the fire out.

God knows I'm not perfect, just that I Love Him.
" Good Day and God Bless "
